Kiely Williams Responds To “Spectacular” Video Criticism
Speaking directly to the camera, former 3LW and Cheetah Girls singer Kiely Williams uploaded a video today addressing the net-wide criticism of her provocative new song and video, “Spectacular”.
[Have no idea what I’m talking about? Catch up here.]
“I am an actress and performer,” she says. “I have been so since my first role in a television pilot at five years old. I played a character when I was a Cheetah Girl. I am playing a character in the music video for the song Spectacular, as I did in the Cheetah Girl movies.”
“The fact is, that sometimes women get intoxicated and have unprotected sex. My video puts this issue front and center. It is absurd to infer or suggest that I am condoning this behavior. Are Lady Gaga and Beyonce advocating murder with the Telephone video? Of, course not. Was Rihanna encouraging suicide with Russian Roulette? No. Was Madonna suggesting that young unmarried girls get pregnant with Papa Don’t Preach? I don’t think so. Is Academy Award winner Monique a proponent of incest because of her portrayal of Mary in the movie Precious. Clearly, the answer is no.
“I wrote Spectacular and made the video to bring attention to a serious womens health and safety issue. Don’t shoot the messenger.”
My two pence? A well-articulated defense. If she was really trying to make a point and draw attention to a “serious issue” with the song and video, she should have done so in equally well-articulated fashion. Not convinced.
It also seems a tad innacurate to compare her artistic/cultural contributions to those of Beyonce, Madonna, Rihanna, Gaga and Monique. ;o)
This maybe exactly what she wants!! I think the official term for it would be ‘pulling a Kanye’
Draw negative publicity to herself to get back in the limelight (‘cos lets face it, her light went out a long time ago) and then try and rectify it, attempt to get people to like her again and try and hold on to the buzz of it all… then maybe try to relaunch her career, get a deal and plan her world domination LOL

@Tola – She’s talking about her boyfriend. Her Dad disapproves of their r’ship and comes round to it at the end. Watch the video again and it all makes sense.
Thanx. I did think that initially but then there was all this controversy over the idea of teenage pregnancy etc at the time…even though I was little so how I knew all this who knows?!

What happened to the Latino one in 3LW? Naturi played a hoe in Notorious & Kielys “pretending” to be a trick in Spectacular!
Last time I saw her she was on Keeping Up With The Kardashians. She used to date Rob (Kims lil bro).
All she did was make herself look stupid in that video and commit yet another crime we don’t need against music.
…and somebody needs to tell her that Madonna wasn’t talking about having a baby in Papa Don’t Preach either!
Really? What was ‘Papa don’t preach’ about then? Honestly had no idea there was a hidden meaning.
Back to the clip, everything about this ‘explanation’ is disingenuous. Her mannerisms, her timed deliberations etc. One minute Kieley’s saying it’s all right for songs to be lightweight (almost to justify the facile nature of the song) and then she claims to be raising awareness of a harrowing social issue. More like she’s trying to compete and out-do Rihanna, Beyoncé and the like in the controversy stakes and she’s finally got the exposure for which she was willing to sell her soul.
As for the so-called artistic/cultural ‘contributions’ of Madonna, Beyoncé and Gaga, if you can call it that…she is right to compare herself to them. These media personalities (the term ‘artist’ as far as I’m concerned is wasted on them) set the template for this kind of crude objectification of the female form and the blame should be rightly assigned to them. They’ve done more harm than good to the cause of progressive gender politics and if Kieley’s confused efforts to replicate them expose this then so much the better; shows them up for the culpable mercenaries that they are.
On the other hand, for her portrayal of Mary in ‘Precious’ and genuinely bringing to the fore a crucial issue, Mo’Nique deserves better than to be spoken in the same breath as the aforementioned.

The serious heath & safety issue= HOEitus!!
“I wrote Spectacular…” That part made me laugh more than anything in this piece. Meh, the video did nothing to convince me shes drawing the attention of date rape!
Uhm sure, yeah Kiely.
You’re trying to bring the plight of women who get drunk and get taken advantage of to the public’s attention. By glamourising the music video and singing about how much you liked it because the sex was ‘spectacular’.
Roite.
