J. Period x Black Thought – ‘Live Mixtape (Illadelph Edition)’ [EP] | Stream x Free Download

One day last week, I was having one of those slow days at my 9-to-5 and, to be honest, so was everyone in the office. Where most people spent the time discussing football and the chances of England winning Euro 2012 [Writer’s Note: to which I chimed in “zilch, zero”], I spent the time trawling through my iPod for something new to listen to. I’ve got a tonne of music stored on my iTunes that I have yet to listen to or haven’t listened to in a long, very long time — mostly mixtapes.

As I trawled through the “compilations” under my US Hip-Hop section [Writer’s Note: the Hip-Hop on my iTunes/iPod is split into US Hip-Hop, UK Hip-Hop, African Hip-Hop, Japanese Hip-Hop and New Zealand Hip-Hop — yes I’m a David Dallas and Scribe fan], one particular joint that I hadn’t listened to in over a year caught my eye: New York DJ J. Period‘s Live Mixtape (Illadelph Edition) featuring Black Thought.

If you know anything about me, you’ll most certainly know that I’m a huge Roots Crew stan and lover of live music. I have every Roots crew album, EP and official mixtape that has ever been released and I have twice seen them live and am currently planning to see them on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon later this year.

That being said, I’m pretty sure you guys can imagine how excited I was to see THIS. Bottom line: BLACK THOUGHT IS A FUCKING BEAST ON THE MIC and without a doubt one of the most UNDERRATED EMCEES OF ALL TIME (yeah I said it).

However that’s not the point of this post.

The point of this post is to bring your attention to J. Period and Black Thought’s heavily slept-on 2010 mixtape.

Every weekend I will post heavily underrated/slept-on and sometimes just old but revered mixtapes to share with you, our international SoulCulture loyalists. Call it our #SleptOnMixtapeWeekend.

So without further ado, I present to you: J. Period and Black Thought’s Live Mixtape (Illadelph Edition).

Back on September 26th 2010, mixtape don J. Period and Black Thought headlined Toronto’s 4th annual Manifesto Festival. During their set, J. Period performed live remixes for the T-Dot faithful whilst Thought rhymed over every single beat. Thought spat gems over instrumentals from Foxy Brown, Damian Marley, dead prez, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Biggie, Drake and a hell of a lot more.

The live mixtape, which originally came with a visual showcasing duo’s stage destruction, behind the scenes footage and an exclusive interview with the gentlemen (see below), is 30 minutes long and includes audio from a past performance at the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival.

Hope you guys enjoy the tape as much as I do.
