With DJ Live on the ones and twos, South Bronx rapper Fred The Godson dropped by The Backroom at 106 & Park on Wednesday for a dope freestyle.

Fred’s status as a talented New York rapper has sometimes come as a burden for him, as have his struggles with various illnesses, but none of this matters here. Instead, he uses smart wordplay (“They say I’m too intricate, I’m from the Bronx, hip hop’s birth certificate”) and gritty humour (“Used to wear a vest on dark night but after Colorado wore a vest to see the Dark Knight”), to embrace these challenges with a typically hoarse set of rhymes.
