Flying Lotus – “Flotus” | New Music

On his birthday last night (Oct 7), Flying Lotus unleashed a massive, previously-unheard track in an exclusive mix for Radio One’s Diplo & Friends show.

“Flotus”, with its lush synth melody and dirty South snares, is simpler and prettier than much of the the Flying Lotus we heard on Until the Quiet Comes. Whilst there’s an ambient aspect to it, it’s the sort of track that sounds tailor-made for a hip hop collaboration; I think it would sound great paired up with the hazy, purple’d up rap of ASAP Rocky or with Bay Area representatives Main Attrakionz, who thrive on this soft synth/hard drum combination.

Flying Lotus himself has name-checked artists such as Drake and Busta Rhymes in recent interviews, suggesting that he would be happy to produce more R&B/hip hop sounding beats for mainstream consumption, if these sort of artists communicated with him more. In one discussion, the LA producer mentioned the fact that he had actually made a “whole bunch of crazy ass dirty South beats and dubstep basslines”, but that they’d rarely the light of day. He hinted that he might drop a .zip file of dirty South stuff soon, but that they were currently sitting idle on his hard drive.

I for one hope we hear more tracks like “Flotus.” Take a listen to the radio rip below and let us know what you think in the C-section:
