Flatbush Zombies – “Laker Paper” | New Music

Sometimes, what’s understood needn’t be explained. That’s exactly the case with Flatbush Zombies. To unacquainted tastes, the Brooklyn-based trio – comprised of Zombie Juice, Meechy Darko and Erick Arc Elliott – will strike up a crop of questions: “Why do you dress so funny?”, “Why do you smoke so much weed?” and most commonly, “Why are you called Zombies?”

Unlike numerous leftfield acts before them (and probably after them, too), Flatbush Zombies aren’t a fabrication based on shock tactics or carefully engineered identities. They keep it 100. “Absolutely. 95% of our relationship is outside of music. If I lost my vocal chords today we would still be hanging out,” Meechy told The Village Voice in a recent interview.

Captivating audiences and stacking the YouTube hits like lego blocks (their flagship release “Thug Waffle” currently sits on an ample 300,000 view count) Juice, Meechy and Elliott have infested the industry beyond their Flatbush, Brooklyn headquarters and recently claimed supporting spots for A$AP Rocky and Danny Brown gigs.

With heavy support from esteemed tastemakers like The Madbury Club, their online following has fleshed out to a stage where they can simply post a new track on Tumblr (not an mp3 or anything, just a YouTube link) and demand your attention in an instant.

Having cut a ribbon today on their latest output by doing exactly that, Flatbush Zombies’ “Laker Paper” is something that you should play – even if it’s the only thing you listen to today. Oh, and in case you’re asking, no the Magic Johnson cover art requires no explanation.
