Emilio Rojas freestyles in The Backroom for 106 & Park [Video]

Rochester, New York rapper Emilio Rojas hasn’t been on my radar too much lately, but I still occasionally listen to the half-Venezuelan spitter on the strength of his 2010 tape Life Without Shame, and in this latest freestyle for The Backroom segment of BET’s 106 & Park he demonstrates his lyricism for all those who are unfamiliar.

As so many rappers tend to do, Rojas uses The Backroom space to bring us the story of his life up until now, and he tells it well, darting from image to image over a gritty, early ’00s-sounding beat. Whilst his cadence is a little Slaughterhouse-lite for me, he weaves together his birth in a violent New York, his mixed ethnicity and his father’s return to Venezuela (tantamount to abandonment) with apparent ease, and keeps the listener hooked in the process.

Listen to the freestyle below, and look out for Emilio’s next project No Shame, No Regrets, which drops next January.
