It’s happening again… Those pesky Americans are stealing another one of our popstars and all we can do is stand by and watch with pride as our A-List stars become unavailable for interviews and busy touring the United States. After the success of Jay Sean, Taio Cruz, Tinie Tempah, Adele, Jessie J, One Direction and The Wanted (have I missed anyone?), Glaswegian singer-songwriter Emeli Sande looks set to be the latest UK export to make waves over in the United States. She performed “Next To Me” live on Conan O’Brien’s TBS chat show Conan.
Her UK #1 album Our Version of Events will be released in the US in June.
Disclaimer: For the record, I’m obviously extremely proud of Emeli and of (almost) every UK artist that’s doing their thing in the United States and worldwide right now. It’s a beautiful moment and I hope it continues. Some people, perhaps unable to understand my “British” sense of humour, seem to have taken my description of the American music industry as “pesky” to literally mean that I’m opposed to the success of UK artists in the US. If you gleaned that from what was written, you’re genuinely stupid I would point you towards subtext like the enthusiastic listing of a multitude of breakthrough UK acts, the use of ‘happy’ phrases like “make waves” (that means “do good things”), the fact that I said we’re watching with pride or even the posting of the story in the first place. I understand the confusion – after all, people saying one thing and meaning another is practically unheard of, especially on the internet, where everybody tells the truth.

Woah, how could I forget my beloved Leona Lewis?! My bad.
American is the land of opportunities and UK is the land of obstacles, So how could you pretend her to stay. Get a life
Absolute Power In M!O!R!E! From the UK with love!
First of all the american do wat they know best sell sexy music…secondly in the uk these singers don’t get enough airplay for their type of music…look at estelle, marcia ambrosious, jay sean, taio cruz etc..why did they have to go to america…whereas adelle..jessie j..(.amy winehouse, god rest her soul) gets / got better airplay from both sides of the pond…hint hint hope ur gettin the point nw…
Thirdly..I wish them every success as they say america is a land where dreams do come thru…so go for it emeli…..
U missed Estelle, Leona Lewis, etc
An artist with something to say. Lovely performance
I was definitely being serious. From my tone, it was obvious that I’m genuinely aggrieved about the success of British artists in America. I hate it.
I know, I should really be grateful to the American market for showing off British talent to the world. Nevermind that US artists are heavily adopting the UK sound in a bid to stay fresh and relevent, thank the heavens those generous US consumers and radio stations are shining a light on our poor, otherwise entirely forgotten artists. They’d get no love otherwise.
Except that a lot of these artists are already touring the world before they break in the States…
Behave! You and I know your sense of humour does not travel across the pond.
Wonderful this the music! I pleaseure listening..
The americans are not stealing them they are sharing them with the world cause the American market is so known.. You all should be proud cause you the Uk is producing the most talented and interesting entertainers in the last years
Erm…. I take it you don’t get our British sarcasm.
