Digging: DJ Babu’s beat banging Japan-influenced ‘Konnichiwa Bitches’ Mix | Stream

Last year the Legendary DJ Babu of the Beat Junkies (and also known as one third of Dilated Peoples) dropped a mix which has recently resurfaced, fusing two of my biggest loves, Hip-Hop and Japan. Taking its title from a Chappelle Show skit, Konnichiwa Bitches is a fusion of Japanese TV samples, funky rhythms, banging beats and of course Babu’s world-class scratching clocking in at just under 50 minutes.

Babu’s description explains his motives for putting the mix out:

Several months ago my friends B+ and EC hit me up about doing a mixtape consisting of Japanese records. B, E and myself had all been on ridiculous digging missions together before and they had known that I had lost my mind in japan a couple times copping Japanese joints… so this idea made perfect sense… this mix contains a lot of tv and movie soundtracks and scores, studio background music, amine soundtracks, funk, pop, rock & soul with the common thread being dope funky music! I hope u enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed putting this together!
– Peace, BABU/DILATED/JUNKY

The mix is a true ode to all aspects of culture in the Land of the Rising Sun, and closes with a loop from the ending to the original 1985 Lupin the Third anime, “Love Theme” by Yuji Ohno, which hip hop heads may better recognise as the original sample from the Curren$y track “J.L.R.” from The Stoned Immaculate.

Konnichiwa B*tches is out now, and a 10 minute sample of the entire mix available for streaming below.
