David Stewart – “Lay On The Bonnet” | New Music

I heard this track for the first time on Mistajam‘s BBC Radio 1Xtra show earlier this evening, having never heard of David Stewart (it seems I’m fairly late to the party given that he’s already got over 7,000 Twitter followers). Hours later, I don’t know whether it was the vocals or the dark, driven production that caught my attention, but something made me prick up my ears.

Sure, “Lay On The Bonnet” is massively, maybe even shamefully, derivative – this is clearly an attempt to produce a British, sanitized version of The Weeknd – but it’s perhaps the best copycat attempt thus far.

A quick bit of search engine action revealed that Stewart is Example‘s guitar-player, as well as a singer and songwriter in his own right, which goes some way to explaining his not insignificant Twitter following.

Interestingly, he’s got a 10-track project entitled Late Night Viewing dropping soon, which features his mate Example, as well as  Ed Sheeran, Wretch 32 and Yasmin – guest spots of this ilk suggest that he’s either got some notable backing or some pretty useful friends.

Whilst this particular track borrows heavily from The Weeknd, there’s just about enough to it to make me want to hear more. Fingers crossed that what comes next is just a touch more original.
