Curren$y, Trademark Da Skydiver, Young Roddy – “No Sleep” | New Music

New music from Curren$y and his Jet Life crew. Here Spitta teams up with fellow New Orleans emcee Trademark Da Skydiver and co-pilot Young Roddy for “No Sleep,” the first single from the upcoming Jets compilation Jet World Order 2.

Whereas the first Jet World Order was characterised by its consistently airy production and deck-chair rhymes (think rapping stoned on the beach), this track sees the rappers take a step in a new direction. In particular, the shuddering, bass-driven beat by New Jersey-based production duo Fortunate Ones is unlike anything from the last album (except “Blow Up” perhaps, but it’s smarter than that). Could this be an indication that the crew are stirring up the pot a little (pardon the pun)?

One criticism hip hop fans sometimes level at Curren$y and the other Jet Lifers is that they play it safe, failing to experiment with flows and rhyme patterns.  Here, enveloped by a paranoia-inducing beat (including spooky choir vocals), they’re forced to take risks. The gamble it pays off. Young Roddy in particular kills it. Now, if we could just get Smoke DZA and Sir Michael Rocks on the album…

Stream “No Sleep” below, and watch out for Jet World Order 2, which comes out on the 20th November.
