Classic Soul Sample: Kano’s Brown Eyes vs Patti Austin

A song came on the car radio a few days ago, and even though I was sure I didn’t know it, it was uncannily familiar and when the chorus came along I sang with such gusto. I chalked it up to it being one of the many forgotten musical gems of my childhood.

Then I realised where I recognised it from; the chorus was sampled in “Brown Eyes” lifted from Kano‘s 2005 debut Home Sweet Home, the DaVinChe produced trailblazer that set example for many following ‘Grime love songs’ to emerge from the scene.

The introduction and loop through the melody is lifted from “That’s Enough for Me” by Grammy award-winning Jazz/Soul singer Patti Austin.  An album track from Patti Austin’s 1977 record Havana Candy, this is one of the lesser known songs from Ms Austin’s career. It is, however, undoubtably a big tune and an even better sample.
