For the one year anniversary since the passing of legendary singer and performer Whitney Houston, Billboard pay homage to her memory with a week-long tribute to her life and hits. Soul singer Chrisette Michele takes the hot seat by covering one of the late singer’s biggest songs, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” as she gives it an acoustic twist.

Speaking on Houston, Michele admits, “I study her DVDs. Literally the way footballers take notes before the Super Bowl, I’ll watch a Whitney show before I go onstage.”  And her practiced showed as she gave a beautiful rendition of the 1987 hit, accompanied only by Guitar Slayer on the strings.

“A lot of times when people sing Whitney songs they go home and find their greatest voice they can find and sing the biggest ballad she sang,” she says, as she gives background to her song choice. “I tried to just bring a lighter side to the legacy of Whitney which was ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody.'”
