BBC Radio 1 schedule changes; Gemma Cairney and Jameela Jamil join station | News

BBC Radio 1 has announced changes to their schedule with which include a shift of the current presenters and new additions that will take effect on April 2, 2012.

T4 television host Jameela Jamil is joining the station to host the Radio 1 Request Show on Sundays from 7-9pm. She said: “To say I’m excited is a major understatement – being offered the opportunity to join the Radio 1 family is literally a dream come true and I can’t wait to slip on the headphones.”

Gemma Cairney will move over from sister station 1Xtra to take over the weekend breakfast show from 7-10am. Gemma started at 1Xtra in 2009 initially as Trevor Nelsons co host on breakfast before hosting her own show on 1Xtra on weekdays between 1-4pm. Sarah Jane, who currently hosts the weekend afternoon show from 1-4pm will take over Gemma’s slot and new signing Adele will take the reigns from Gemma.

She said of her new opportunity: “I arrived at 1Xtra just over three years ago a wide eyed puppy & soon became obsessed with all things radio. It will be really emotional, but I’m only moving downstairs to Radio 1 and I can’t wait for all the new fun it’ll bring.”

Greg James will host drive time on Radio 1 to swap with Scott Mills, who will now front the lunchtime show from 1-4pm.

On the changes to the schedule station controller Ben Cooper said: “These are exciting times at Radio 1 & 1Xtra. The latest changes are about attracting even more young listeners by bringing in new and fresh talent to the stations. At the end of last year we announced changes to the specialist music line-up, so I’m really looking forward to hearing the new line up in full when we launch in April.”

Skream & Benga, Toddla T, Charlie Sloth and Friction will all be hosting their own shows on BBC 1Xtra from next month and Seani B will take over from Charlie Sloth to host the Hip Hop mix show on Fridays from 1-4am.
