Anisa – “Dominoes” acoustic performance [Video]

Hailing from Manchester, singer-songwriter Anisa is signed to Alwayz Recording (the North London based independent label which was home to Chipmunk amongst other stars) and looks certain to make noise in 2011.
I first came across her in 2008, on Tim Westwood‘s now-deceased Sunday night 1Xtra show, where she appeared alongside Ny, Alex Mills and Katy B (who has gone on to become a huge mainstream star).
The video has long since disappeared from YouTube but you can check out a radio rip of her performance on the show below.

What really grabbed my attention about that PA and what I really like about Anisa in general is her tone (blasphemy perhaps, but she reminds me of Beyonce) and her capacity to carry genuine passion and soul in her vocals. The fact that she can play the piano (as evidenced in her A64 below) and is distractingly beautiful (again, fairly evident from the video) definitely help her case, but its the emotion in her vocals that sell it and sets her apart from the dozens of vocally vapid soulless aspiring popstars floating around on the underground and in the mainstream.

Without a shadow of doubt, her voice and particular style of singing won’t be to everybody’s taste, but she’s a winner to me (#nocharliesheen) and one to watch.
