Aloe Blacc – Lift Your Spirit | Album Stream

Many forget that Aloe Blacc is a rapper-turned-singer. Originally one half of underground Hip-Hop group Emanon for a decade (with producer Exile), Blacc, real name Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III, found his own sound with the eclectic, largely self-produced record Shine Through in 2006, and international success followed with his 2010 soul album Good Things, featuring the infectious hit “I Need A Dollar.”

The Orange County-born singer has now pushed his musical palette to even further territory with his latest offering, Lift Your Spirit, with production handled by DJ Khalil, Rock Mafia and Pharrell Williams. This album features the already highly played single “Wake Me Up” [When I realised that it was an Aloe Blacc song, my jaw dropped], which blends dance music with country music.

While Lift Your Spirit is quite heavy in it’s use of guitars, there is so much more offered here sonically. From the determined country march of “Here Today” to the anthemic defiance of “The Man”; the strings weaving throughout a choir chanting “This is MY world!”.  From the soulful two-step bounce of “Love is The Answer” to the more intimate arrangements of “Owe It All,” which brings to mind some of D’Angelo or Raphael Saadiq‘s works.

After chart success in the United States and Europe, Lift Your Spirit gains an official UK release this April. For an early listen, press play on the album preview below.
