Adele’s 21 album goes diamond | Music News

Less than two years since Adele released her Grammy Award-winning sophomore album 21, it has been revealed that the record-breaking LP has sold over 10 million copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

The album, which originally came out on January 24th 2011, joins Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory and Usher’s Confessions as the third album to reach the 10 million sales mark this year, and the 21st to reach diamond status overall. However, the speed with which 21 has sold is astonishing; Hybrid Theory came out back in the year 2000 and Confessions was released in 2004, some eight years ago.

Adele’s great break-up record is of course most famous for its number one singles, “Someone Like You” and “Rolling In The Deep“, worldwide hits which have provided the base for 21 to reach milestone after milestone and dominate the charts.

Before it dropped down to 42nd position earlier this week, 21 had been in the UK Album Chart Top 40 for an astonishing 22 months; including 71 consecutive weeks in the Top 10. In an age of declining CD sales, the album succeeded in becoming both the most downloaded album in UK history, the UK’s biggest selling album this century, and the fifth biggest-selling album in the UK of all time.

It’s safe to say the North London singer-songwriter is now rolling in the money.
