A$AP Rocky has not only broken into the music world with his debut album Long.Live.A$AP hitting the number one spot, but he is now also a fully fledged fashionista, solidifying his position during his recent trip to Paris for Haute Couture Fashion Week as well as sitting front row in his hometown for New York Fashion Week. Inbetween checking out runway shows, A$AP sat down with men’s online retailer Mr Porter for a photoshoot and interview.

Speaking on where his interest in fashion all began, the Harlem rapper recalls his love of designers starting aged eight; while other kids were content with the latest Nike kicks and GAP jumpers, Rocky was a bit more sophisticated in his taste.

“At the age of eight I started getting into fashion, brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica and Ralph Lauren,” he begins. “But in 2005 I started wearing John Richmond jeans. I was into Prada and Dolce & Gabbana at the time and that’s why I started to wear tight jeans, because I wanted to be a model. I started to do freelance work for Calvin Klein so I was slim and it just stuck.”

With such an interest in clothing and with designers throwing collaboration deals his way, it would be the logical next step to assume that an A$AP clothing collection would be on its way, but veering away from the status quo Rocky insists that that’s not in his current plans.

“I don’t want to. It would be disrespectful to take my stardom and bully my way into the fashion industry, because I didn’t go to [fashion] school to learn about design, sketching and fabrics. I just enjoy it; I’m a consumer.”

Another thing that disassociates him from the crowd is his opinion on jewellery. “I have a Rolex, but no diamonds,” Rocky says. And he doesn’t think much of people who do drown themselves in bling. “Rappers wear diamonds to compensate for a lack of fashion sense. I don’t even have pierced ears – I’m not into that, it’s too much.”

With his pretty muthafucker good looks and his high-fashion taste, lame rumours of the rapper’s sexuality have circled, but it’s not something he takes personally. “People say I’m gay sometimes, but I have a lot of bitches so why would I care? It doesn’t bother me at all.”

Taking a more insightful look at why rumours started, A$AP says, “You know why they say that? Because they can’t say that I suck, they can’t say that I’m not handsome, and they can’t say that my lyrics are wack, so they say that I’m gay because they don’t have anything on me.”

As unusual as his overall package may be, it seems that it’s exactly what the fans needed as his and A$AP Mob‘s popularity only grows over time. “I’m not your average rapper,” he states. “For [me and A$AP mob] to be thugs and admire high fashion is kind of odd, but people like it.”
