14th: Get Familiar

Singer-songwriter Tracey Duodu and producer Tom Barber are 14th – a new and upcoming London-based duo who, while describing themselves and their sound as an “underwater space party,” have their roots firmly in UK Garage and ’90s dance music.

Named after a lyric from an Outkast song on The Love Below album (we won’t tell you which one), 14th burst onto the scene with the massively soulful and infectious single “Hide Yourself”; with several “tastemaker blogs” scrambling for what genre to appropriately file them under. Descriptors such as Drum & Bass, Dubstep, Funky House, 2-step, Electronic Pop have all been tossed about – as if music this good needs any categorization whatsoever.

Subsequently and more importantly however (at least for the duo), 14th have had the privilege of premiering their debut EP Hide Yourself exclusively with The Guardian and performing at the world renowned Maida Vale studios for BBC Radio 1 – all of this in the short space of only a few months of “bursting onto the scene.”

Now gearing up to seize 2012 by the scruff of the neck in their own unique and hybrid fashion, Doudu and Barber have recently unveiled the follow-up to their debut single “Hide Yourself,” titled “Take Me There,” which is scheduled for release on February 6, 2011 and is another beautifully crafted and addictive Garage-tinged gem with very soulful vocals that is sure to keep us enthralled with the duo and will certainly win the duo a bout of new fans and listeners.

14th – “Take Me There”:

I like 14th and there are a wide array of reasons for my fondness for this duo (Duodu’s vocals are exceptionally captivating for one) – but none more important than the simple truth that they are making genuinely amazing music. Plus it’s neither gimmicky nor pretentious, which is a rather welcomed change of pace from quite a lot of the new and emerging music coming out of the UK right now. I implore you to pay attention to 14th going into 2012.
