Hometown: Birmingham, UK
Record Label: Unsigned
We’re not sure what they are putting in the water up in Birmingham but it is fast becoming the breeding ground for some of the hottest talent from the UK, with the likes of Mike Skinner (The Streets) all the way up to newcomers including Laura Mvula, Lady Leshurr and Jacob Banks all delivering some of the most exciting music from these shores. Also repping that Brum movement is rapper RoxXxan, who regular SoulCulture visitors should already be familiar with.
Formerly signed to Polydor records, the 22 year old artist released “Tear” featuring L Marshall and Benny Banks, then things went quiet. Failing to get the momentum or support she needed from the major machine, R-O-Triple-X cut ties with the label and embarked on her independent journey with a new energy and direction.
Following a scene-stealing appearance on the underground smash UK Female Allstars posse cut “Rock The Mic,” she joined forces with UK rising superproducer Mikey J (who has produced hits for the likes of Kano, Delilah, Estelle, Wiley, Wretch 32 and Tanya Lacey) and a new management team and locked herself in the studio to create her debut mixtape Prepare 4 When I Land, which was released in December.
The project perfectly paired RoxXxan’s commanding tone, rambunctious no hold’s barred lyrics and energetic yet flexible flow and delivery with Mikey J’s well-crafted soundbeds, combining UK Bass, Hip Hop, Dancehall and R&B elements into a strong 12-track introduction into the world of RoxXxan. With support from some of the biggest online outlets and radio powerhouse personalities, including Zane Lowe, Nick Grimshaw, Huw Stephens, Twin B, as well as taking herself on the road for a national tour, she ended 2012 on a serious high note.
With the labels now sniffing back around, Rox is back in the booth prepping the follow up to Prepare 4 Where I Land as well as her debut commercial Long Player. All eyes on xXx in 2013.
