Chillwave producer Toro y Moi has taken a leaf out of Ricky Gervais‘ book and just released a cover of his David Brent-inspired song, “Slough.”
Penned as part of the fictional series Learn To Play Guitar With David Brent, where The Office main-man gives tips on all things musical, “Slough” is Gervais’ satirical homage to the geographical home of The Office and industrial suburb of London. With his version, Toro y Moi impressively manages to keep the humour of the original lyrics in his track whilst updating the instrumentation to create a surprisingly appealing listen.
I’m not sure that covering a Ricky Gervais comedy song should be high up on Toro y Moi’s list of musical priorities, but who knows, it might spell the beginning of a very unusual change in tone for the well-regarded songwriter and producer. Listen below and let us know whether you think it’s a hit or a miss.
