Having made her name in 2003 with a soulful, well-crafted and critically acclaimed Untitled debut album (lead singles: “Guess You Didn’t Love Me” ft. Mos Def, “Ching Ching (Loving You Still)”, “Drawing Board”), followed by L.O.V.E (2005) and I Am (2006), UK Soul singer Terri Walker‘s name and voice have been largely absent from the mainstream for several years.
She resurfaced on the radar last month when the Hip Hop blogs got hold of “Aerials” from Ski Beatz’ (Jay Z, Camp Lo) forthcoming 24 Hour Karate School album, featuring Terri alongside Curren$y, Stalley, Whosane and Mos Def.
Now, she’s really coming back. With a new album in the works, Terri Walker exclusively gives SoulCulture the first scoop on her 2010 comeback.
Speaking from New York, the versatile vocalist reveals that she has begun recording her fourth studio album with Ski Beatz on production duties, which will be distributed through Damon Dash‘s newly resurrected Roc-A-Fella label.
“I have no release date confirmed yet but I can tell you the theme: seeing as I am working with Hip Hop legends, I have decided to have a Hip Hop theme on this album. I want to have a lot of up and coming features on this album – US and UK – and whoever fits what I’m doing. So far it has all fit into place. I’m going to be distributed through Roc-A-Fella which means more freedom for me.”
The Roc-a-fella connection came about when she was introduced to Ski Beatz and Dame Dash through “a good friend of mine, Naheem Kassan who tour manages Mos Def.” You may recall that Mos Def featured on her debut release, “Guess You Didn’t Love Me” from her Untitled album on Def Jam UK back in 2003.”I’ve recently started recording my fourth studio album with Ski Beatz which is going to be distributed through Roc-A-Fella as he is Dame Dash’s main producer. It’s all been a blessing!”, she gushes.
Without further ado, here’s an exclusive audio snippet of the first single from Terri’s new, as-yet untitled, album.
Terri Walker – “Understanding” (prod. by Ski Beatz):
“I know I’ve been gone for a minute, right!” she admits. “I’ve been in the states honing my craft. I’ve been in Miami working on a project called The Champagne Flutes with Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse, Nas) who I got introduced to by Desmond George (GGI) – he used to manage [UK artists] Ms Dynamite and now Bashy. If you don’t know him, you better get to know! That should be out from July.”
However, the singer hasn’t been entirely out-of-sight since her 2006 album, I Am. Keen eyes may have spotted her voice on ‘Last Call’, which she describes as an “alternative uptempo crazy Miami-based sort of project with Krunkadelic called Belle-Vue.” Terri also features on UK rapper TY‘s latest album Special Kind of Fool, alongside Vula Malinga on “Get To The Sky.” (“You need to get that album because its fresh!”)
She has also been busy performing at several of Damon Albarn’s Africa Express gigs and lending her vocals to the likes of Duran Duran, Badly Drawn Boy, Jamie Callum and Nas – plus backing vocals for both Sex and the City movies, as they were both scored by Salaam Remi. She also featured on the Sex and the City Soundtrack Vol. 2 as The Champagne Flutes, with a song called “Hey Baby”.
“I also dabbled a bit in the funky house scene with Diamond on a track called ‘Love At First Sight’ – not to forget that I’ve been messing with Deep Technology too with a track coming out soon,” she adds. “Watch out for them, they’re kinda special.”
“So yes I may have been absent but I’ve been doing me on the low!” she laughs.
With promising guest features and an exciting team behind her, Terri Walker’s fourth album may well be something special. This time around, we’re able to follow her journey as she documents it (“Shout outs to Creative Control TV!”) – check this new footage of Terri in the studio with Ski Beatz recording her new single.
