“Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately,” Ms. Lauryn Hill announced this weekend whilst her new song, “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix),” was quietly released on iTunes.

Due to be sentenced this week on tax evasion charges, the iconic Grammy Award winning New Jersey singer and rapper’s new single was released suddenly – “by virtue of the impending legal deadline” – through a joint venture with her own label Obverse Creation Music and Sony.

“I love being able to reach people directly,” Hill explains on her tumblr, “but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there.” She adds, “In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!”

Quickly paced instrumental melodies back Lauryn’s equally fast flow on “Neurotic Society” – somewhat in the vein of “Lose Myself” meets the poetry of her Unplugged album – as she reels off a list of toxic social conditions and ailments she’d like to take to task. “10,000 pictures on Facebook? It’s like the pot calling the kettle narcissist.”
