Daughter releases His Young Heart EP, London launch party on April 20 | EP Preview

April 5th, 2011 | by Ayodele Adepoju

Fast-rising London-based 21-year old acoustic/folk singer Elena Tonra, also known as Daughter, just unveiled her debut EP titled His Young Heart. The self-recorded (along with live guitarist Igor Haefeli) and self-released 4-track EP features all new songs – “Landfill”, “The Woods”, “Candles” and “Switzerland” – from Daughter, who captured our ears and hearts at the start of the year with the release of her free 4-track Demo EP [which you can still get from her MySpace page].

His Young Heart carries on beautifully where her Demo EP left off, with Elena showing much more of her songwriting dexterities, exceptional way and ability with words and one of the most ethereal, haunting and compelling vocals I’ve heard in a long time, which I first witnessed on previous tracks like “Your Kisses” and “In The Shallows”.

At four tracks and as with her Demo EP, His Young Heart feels so painfully short and it will come to an end before you know it, leaving you wanting more and more. This is the only fault I can place with this EP and what a fault to even have in the first place but I guess there in might lie a purpose in itself.

My favorite song from the EP right now is “Landfill” which you can download for free here – it is a perfectly written song that straddles the line between feelings of love and hate amongst other things very eloquently in ways that I cannot readily describe.

The equally astounding (or probably even better) “Candles” is backed by very fragile and heartbreaking lyrics that Elena’s dark tone and vocals magnify and bring to life so much so that you are in that “crime scene” she sings about. Listen and download the entire EP below.

Daughter will be playing at The Slaughtered Lamb in Clerkenwell, London on April 20 to launch the His Young Heart EP – and you need to get your tickets for this show because after having wowed the sold-out St. Stephen’s Church in Shepherd’s Bush, London last month while supporting Matthew & The Atlas (performance footage below of the absolutely divine “Run” off her Demo EP), you really do not want to miss Elena’s next performance.
