Columbus, Ohio hailing emcee Copywrite pays homage to one of his “favorite groups and albums of all time” with the Beatles-inspired free album, Carbon Copy’s Phony Art Pub.

Released through Man Bites Dog Records with help from DJ Scratch Johnson, Copywrite’s latest creation comes after feeling burnt out on Hip-Hop – he’s released two albums in the past year (God Save The King and MHz Legacy as part of MegaHertz) – and wanting to explore his love of the album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club by the famous Liverpool foursome.

A project that contains more than its fair share of Hip-Hop samples, the merging of genres and sporadic sound bites allow for a game of name that sample. Describing the album’s conception, according to Copy it was just meant to be. He explains that the John Lennon lyric, “It was 20 years ago today,” hit home like a direct message; “I started when I was 14 and now I’m 34. I felt as if Lennon was talking to that young emcee out of bumfuck Ohio.”

Meshing musical genres in a Danger Mouse [The Grey Album in particular] type of manner, Copywrite’s serious lyrical content is sometimes missed due to the fun and frolics the instrumentals ooze. Nonetheless the project holds an interesting concept. Lovers of music in general, regardless of genre, might find this right up their street. Stream and download the project below.
