Spike Lee may be more known for firing shots at fellow director Quentin Tarantino and blowing up Twitter (@SpikeLee) these days, but there was a time when Spike was regarded as a groundbreaking director and his films were filled with ground-breaking and thought-provoking genius. Fellow Brooklyn repping emcee Skyzoo remembers those days and “Spike Lee Was My Hero” is one of the best homages (in song or video) that I’ve seen for the man.
Pulled from his slept-on 2012 release A Dream Deferred, Skyzoo uses “Spike…” to wax nostalgic about what Lee meant to the rapper growing up in the borough the director helped make famous for a new generation.
The video features snapshots of various Spike Lee films and the director even makes a cameo at the end. Easily one of my favourite videos this year. Skyzoo spits some pretty dope rhymes before Talib Kweli joins the celebration and lets rip over a triumphant beat provided by Tall Black Guy.
