When I saw the clip for Kendrick Lamar‘s “Rigamortis“, in which his brass section do him wonderful service on the street, I couldn’t help but think that musicians playing instruments on the block is something we need to see more in hip hop videos. As a result, I was more than a little pleased to see the video for “The Drums” showed Rapsody rapping with her own special street band, The Soul Council, behind her. Major props to the director Kenneth Price.
The visuals provide a perfect accompaniment to 9th Wonder‘s boom-bap production, not to mention Rapsody’s gleefully intricate verses, and show that hip hop can be amongst the most sophisticated of art forms, when it chooses to be.
