Dot Rotten executes a smart concept in the music video for his new street single “The Best Rappers Alive”.
The black-and-white clip sees the British rapper adopt the persona and style of four different rappers who are often cited as the modern era’s best: Lil Wayne, Drake, Jay Z and Kanye West. Whilst opening and closing with the revolutionary theme of ‘Ye and Jay’s “No Church In The Wild” video, the visual sees Dot impersonate Drizzy in his “I’m On One” video, and rant atop a police car like ‘Ye in the Hype Williams-directed “All Of The Lights” clip.
It’s difficult to say how much the video is seeking to emulate/parody/pay tribute to the aforementioned rappers and you can’t help but wonder if these four really are Dot’s “Best Rappers Alive”, but it’s impressive regardless. Just as Dot welds the quartet’s most famous lyrics and song titles into one coherent whole, Carly Cussen’s clip does something similar with their visual styles, stopping this being a cheap gimmick.
