Disco icon Donna Summer died Thursday morning after losing her battle with cancer. She was 63.

Entertainment website TMZ, who broke the news, reports that the extent of Summer’s illness was not widely known due to her efforts to keep it under wraps and cites “someone who was with Summer a couple weeks ago” as saying the singer “didn’t seem too bad” when they last saw her.

A five-time Grammy winner, Summer rose to prominence during the “disco era” of the 1970s. Her hit songs including “Last Dance,” “Love To Love You Baby” and “I Feel Love” would go on to define the genre during the decade, while songs like “This Time I Know It’s for Real” and “She Works Hard for the Money” gave her much success in the next. Summer topped the charts as recently as 2010, when her single “To Paris With Love” reached the apex of the US Billboard Dance Charts. The singer would go on to amass international record sales in excess of 130 million over the span of her nearly 40-year career.

Summer is survived by her husband Bruce Sudano and her daughters Brooklyn, Amanda and Mimi.
