The sad news has come in that Austin Peralta, one of the youngest and most talented affiliates of Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, has passed away, aged just 22.

In the course of his tragically short life, the California-hailing pianist and composer had already gone a long way towards achieving things many veteran musicians can only dream of. Having learnt piano aged 5, he was heading up classical ensembles alongside well-established bassists Ron Carter and Buster Williams whilst still at high school, and by the time he was 15  he was touring the world with his own trio. The jazz-classical prodigy released two LPs (Maiden Voyage and Mantra) in Japan as a teenager, before beginning a successful crossover into electronic music in recent years with Brainfeeder. Last year he released his Endless Planets LP and this year he worked with Flying Lotus on Until The Quiet ComesIt is also thought that he had a new Brainfeeder album in the works.

Whilst the cause of Austin’s death is still unknown, tributes are already pouring in for the talented young pianist. From Frank Ocean, Brainfeeder companion Tokimonsta tweeted “I will miss you @AustinPeralta” whilst the talented jazz producer/composer Robert Glasper commented “RIP Austin Peralta..gifted young pianist gone to0 soon..glad I got to meet him last month..great dude..praying for his family…”.

RIP Austin. Our thoughts go out to all your friends and family.
