This weekend marked the 20th anniversary of Janet Jackson‘s hugely successful fifth album, janet – boasting sales of over seven million and a mammoth six Hot 100 singles, including “Any Time, Any Place” and “That’s The Way Love Goes.”
In addition to celebrating that milestone the iconic Jackson sister reveals, ending a five year hiatus from the industry, she’s ready to get to work on some brand new music – with a tenth studio album in the pipeline.
“I can’t believe it is already 20 years!” Janet told Billboard, reflecting on the album’s anniversary. “I always write my music based on what is going on in my life at the time… The janet album was sexual and I was beginning to really discover that side of me.”
She went on to say that a new album is currently in the making, although it’s still in the early stages; “I am working on a new project now. We are creating the concept and initial thoughts on the music. I am excited about the direction we are taking. I don’t want to rush it… I don’t want to put a time constraint on the creative process.”
Although the hit making 47-year-old has been out of the charts for a few years, her sultry vocals have recently been heard on Kendrick Lamar‘s “Poetic Justice,” which uses a sample of her Billboard chart-topping single, “Any Time, Any Place”. And despite Janet not appearing in the West Coast rapper’s accompanying visual, she still gives the track her seal of approval.
Having been out of the game for so long, we are definitely looking forward to hearing some new material from Ms Jackson.
There are artists, true performers that have come before me who have been a big inspiration to me. I hope I do the same for others.” –Janet Jackson
