George Zimmerman charged with second degree murder in Trayvon Martin case | News

April 11th, 2012 | by michelle

Just over six weeks since the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and following outcries from across the United States and the globe for justice in a case with countless uncomfortable twists in a tragic chain of events, it has finally been confirmed that George Zimmerman will be charged with second degree murder and is currently in the custody of law enforcement officials in the state of Florida.

In a Jacksonville, Florida, press conference, state attorney Angela Corey spoke to reporters and made it clear that although she could not disclose specifics of the case –including Zimmerman’s current whereabouts– in line with criminal proceedings, she could confirm that Zimmerman turned himself in and that they “only prosecute on facts and not from pressure from the public or media.”

Corey noted that the media had information about the case that should have never been released and asked that we continue to pray for Trayvon’s family, and remember that they are constitutional victims in this tragedy.

Corey also said that Mark O’Mara, Zimmerman’s newly-appointed lawyer, is entitled to request a bond and that a hearing will be held when and if he does so.

At a news conference held outside of his office, O’Mara told reporters that Zimmerman voluntarily surrendered to authorities and that he is “concerned about getting a fair trial and a fair presentation.”

“There’s obviously been a lot of information flowing. I think a lot of it has been premature and inappropriate,” O’Mara said.

If convicted, Zimmerman faces life in prison, the maximum sentence for second degree murder in the state of Florida.

Finally, the process of justice for Trayvon begins.
