Emmy-nominated crime drama Luther may be on the verge of spawning a spinoff, as series creator Neil Cross is in talks to put popular character Alice Morgan into a vehicle of her own.

Portrayed by Ruth Wilson, the murderous and psychopathic Morgan is a fan favorite largely due to her maniacal charm and unique relationship with Idris Elba‘s Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, and Cross says his vision for the proposed project is a mix between The Talented Mr. Ripley and The Last Seduction, and could possibly be set in the U.S.

“The BBC is very interested in the project,” Cross told Variety. “The only real question would be how many and how often we would do it — whether it would be a one-off miniseries or a returning miniseries, a co-production or not.”

Cross notes that the first season of the Alice Morgan project would be “a Luther-free zone,” but suggests that the two could very well come together again.

As for that Luther film that Cross has been hinting at since at least March and which Elba says he really wants to make, it seems to be practically a sure thing.

“We’ve got lots and lots of movie interest, and Idris and I (are being) very careful about what kind of movie we choose to do,” Cross said.

The Alice Morgan project and Luther movie, if either were to come to fruition, would both come after the third season of the television series, which is currently in the works.
