Kendrick Lamar flaunts his new crossover appeal thanks to the success of his debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d. city, performing his hyper-aggressive “Backseat Freestyle” for boxing champion Adrien Broner‘s entrance to the ring Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The contrast in appearances was almost comical, as Kendrick emerged in an all-black T.D.E. hoodie, while Broner walked next to him in his gaudy pink pre-game robe. Despite his early difficulties with the microphone, the Compton emcee’s rousing delivery did the trick, as Broner went on to win his fight against Antonio DeMarco to win his second world title.
It’s certainly been a memorable year for Kendrick, and while fans hope that he will continue to elevate his artistry, it seems clear that he has already taken huge steps towards mainstream prominence.
