Prince was the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the BET Awards. Another stand-out moment in the night, with a VT introduced by Stevie Wonder, an electrifying tribute performance by Janelle Monae who sung “Let’s Go Crazy”, Esperanza Spalding with “If I Was Your Girlfriend” , a pregnant Alicia Keys who rocked out atop her grande piano and Patti Labelle, who threw her Christian Louboutin shoe at Prince whilst “Purple Rain” to him before she and Chaka Khan welcomed him to the stage.  An overwhelmed Prince gracefully thanked his peers and audience while saying “The future’s in your hands now – the world is really yours.”

Watch the full tribute now:

    Alicia Keys amazing…

  2. Todd Stevens says:

I think Prince was trying not to laugh. They murdered his songs. Patti oversings every damn thing, and the rest was just blah. Why didn’t they have someone who would sing the songs with some kind of sanity and at least to where we could stand to listen to it…? Prince is awesome, and as he says, “there will never be another like him”. I mean even GaGa could have done Purple Rain better than those people up there on that asshattery of a tribute.

    1. Tolita says:

You know what? I was getting ready to disagree with Todd but this was a disappointing medley. I think a lot of it had to do with song choices. Pass on Janelle Monae…not crazy about that tune anyway. ‘If I was Your Girlfriend’ didn’t do anything for Esperanza’s voice; she seemed to struggle with the low parts. It’s as if she wanted to compensate with the high notes. She sounded nervous as well. I’m wondering if another track could have done her justice because her tone is sweet. Alicia Keys needs to get some proper vocal coaching to restore her voice and rest it in between because she won’t be able to sing at all in a few years the way she’s going. Patti’s a legend but that’s not her best vocal performance. Again, I’m not sure if it’s down to the song not being quite right for her. A bit of a let down really. And why no men doing tributes?
