Paramount Pictures has announced a 25 October 2013 release date for Paranormal Activity 5. Details are scarce for the time being but the film is expected to be a sequel building off of the events on Paranormal Activity 4, rather than a prequel like the second and third entries in the series.
To recap for those unfamiliar with the series, Paranormal Activity introduced us to Katie, a young woman settling into her new home with her boyfriend. Holding the belief that an evil presence has been following her since a young age they decide to use cameras to record what happens within the house as time goes on. Following a number of incidents they consult a psychic who warns them that the occurrences are due to a demon, not a ghost, which then possesses Katie and kills Micah just as they’re about to leave the house for a hotel.
Paranormal Activity 2 is set a short time before 1 and centres on Katie’s sister Kristi, alongside her husband Dan and baby Hunter. By the end of the film a demon-possessed Katie kidnaps Hunter and disappears, their whereabouts unknown. PA3 showed us the origins of the unnatural encounters Katie and Kristi experienced, and was followed by the fourth film of the series, which focuses on Katie and Hunter’s reappearance after 5 years.
Following Paranormal Activity 4 the series has been left with a few cliffhangers regarding the source of the demonic presence and Hunter’s role, so it awaits to be seen as to whether any will be resolved in the upcoming sequel.
Interestingly, in the US the 25 October release date will pit the film directly against Edgar Wright‘s long-awaited The World’s End, the final instalment in the highly lauded “Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy”, following 2004’s Shaun of the Dead and 2007’s Hot Fuzz, and will of course star Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
