The first trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim has dropped seemingly out of nowhere, and it looks set to be one of the most exciting films of 2013.
The latest movie from the acclaimed director sees humans pilot giant robots called Jaegers to take on multitudes of massive monsters known as Kaiju after they unexpectedly rise from an inter-dimensional portal beneath the ocean (it’s a lot to take in). Each Jaeger is controlled by a pair of human pilots, whose minds are locked in a neural bridge supposedly unifying their actions.
Nearing defeat, hope seems lost until those defending mankind are forced to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) who join forces to drive a legendary Jaeger from the past that appears to be obsolete.
An homage to Japanese giant monster films (Kaiju means strange beast in Japanese but is universally synonymous with Japanese giant monsters), the trailer shows that the battle between the humans and behemoths will be more than cataclysmic, and makes me pine for a live-action Gundam film. Portal fans who hear a familiar voice in the trailer will be glad to know that that is the voice of GLaDOS, Ellen McLain as the AI speaking briefly. Forbes reports that McLain’s voiced went through a similar alteration process in the film, which explains why they sound so alike.
Pacific Rim also stars Idris Elba as General Stacker Pentecost seen in the trailer inspiring his soldiers to cancel the apocalypse, alongside Charlie Day, Max Martini, Diego Klattenhoff, Clifton Collins Jr., Ellen McLain, Robert Mallet and Ron Perlman, a frequent collaborator of del Toro’s.
Watch the trailer below, and get ready for the battle when the film opens in cinemas on 12 July, 2013.
