Found footage movies and POV style films usually play to the scarier, supernatural side of motion pictures, documenting the horrifying and devastating impacts of all sorts of ghosts and ghouls. Typically, they capture the havoc wreaked by monsters, witches and demons. This could be seen with popular features and franchises like the Rec. series, Cloverfield and The Blair Witch Project.

New film End of Watch – a thumping, all action cops versus robbers drama – veers off course from the usual horrorcore fare, taking a look at the violent and corrupt underbelly of police departments and gangland, making good, intimate use of point-of-view film-making to bring LA’s crime wars to life on the silver screen.

The movie is penned and directed by Training Day writer and Street Kings film-maker David Ayer. Lifting the lid on the grime, the backroom dealings, street politics and destruction of underworld gangsters, businessmen, and crooked cops, the film touches on Ayer’s favourite themes, treading similar ground as his previous movies.

End of Watch stars the very gifted Jake Gyllenhaal, who will be looking to add to other meaty, notable performances in pictures like Zodiac, Brokeback Mountain, Jarhead and Donnie Darko, whilst the impressive Michael Peña plays Gyllenhaal’s partner, Officer Zavala.

Peña, a distinguished actor finally coming into his own is also set to feature in a number of other high profile projects in the next few months, including Gangster Squad. Future leading lady, Anna Kendrick, also joins Gyllenhaal and Peña in the film, along with other notable performers, such as Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera and Frank Grillo.

End of Watch is released on November 23. Watch the trailer for the high octane drama below.
