Entertainment Weekly has revealed that the two upcoming standalone Star Wars films will be an origin story for Harrison Ford’s unforgettable character Han Solo and a feature film adventure for the bounty hunter Boba Fett “at the center of a rogue’s gallery of galactic scum”.

Earlier in the week Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that new Star Wars films outside of the post-Return of the Jedi trilogy that had already been announced., and made mention that they will focus on existing characters in the vast universe that has grown exponentially since the first film was released back in 1977.

Both films would allow for Darth Vader to return as a villain, and potentially allow for a number of characters from the original trilogy such as Jabba the Hutt and Greedo to reappear.

Speaking to CNBC, Iger divulged: “I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films, Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. We still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8, and 9 roughly over a six-year period of time, starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period, too.”

Though Iger wouldn’t confirm any characters when asked, he did say that  JJ Abrams will be a consultant on the newly announced films, which are expected for release in 2015 and 2021. It was rumoured that one of the films will focus on the master jedi Yoda, as Kasdan wrote Yoda’s first film debut though it now seems such talk was unfounded. Yoda has made a return to our screens in the past year, featuring in a number of TV adverts, posters and billboards for Vodafone, much to the anger of fans, who will now unfortunately have to wait at least a little while longer for someone to pick him up out of the gutter and give him his own feature.

Are there any Star Wars characters you would love to see as the central focus of a film? Let us know in the comments.
