Now that Miley Cyrus’ twerked-filled VMA performance is unfortunately etched in people’s minds, the original Queen of Twerk Big Freedia is set to premiere her own reality show next month in hopes of bringing a more positive light to the New Orleans Bounce scene from which the dance originated.
Created by FUSE TV, the unscripted show titled Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce debuts on October 2nd – which is also the release date for Freedia’s Queen of Twerk EP – and follows the artist and other Bounce performers as they attempt to push the musical style into the mainstream.
“We’ve been twerking for years!” Freedia, born Freddie Ross Jr., told Esquire in a recent interview. “My attention isn’t on being the ambassador for Bounce; my attention is on working and to keep on grinding and keep on making some moves for Bounce music while making history for New Orleans and the culture.”
[I co-sign her statement. I spent summers in NOLA in the '90s and “popping” (as it was known then) was the dance of choice. So I have younger cousins who can pop it waaaaay better than Miley ever will!]

Big Freedia will also play Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, Texas in November (8-10) alongside a line-up that includes Snoop Dogg, Simian Mobile Disco, Bonobo, Ice-T and Little Boots.
