Color Outside The Lines: A Tattoo Documentary by Artemus Jenkins

Since my homegirl and SoulCulture contributing photographer Tamar got actively involved in the business of tattoo art I’ve taken more of an interest, and the laws of attraction drew my eye to this tattoo documentary Color Outside The Lines. The brainchild of tattoo artist Miya Bailey, this film addresses the stigmas attached to black tattoo artists, with goal “to create a film that not only sheds light on the artform, but also allows the artform to be represented in the right way.”

Directed by Artemus Jenkins and filmed in NYC, DC, London and Atlanta, among other subjects the documentary explores the “overwhelming population of “scratchers” in the black community; untrained people with tattoo machines “looking to make a fast buck,” also highlighting the history of black tattoo culture and how it began.
