Josh Osho : Get Familiar

This South London native describes himself as a singer, songwriter, troubadour and wordsmith who makes classic song writing look absolutely effortless. Judging by his first two singles – last year’s “Redemption Days” featuring Ghostface Killah and "Giants" featuring Childish Gambino - the above description is a pretty accurate one.

Michael Kiwanuka - Home Again | Album Review

Michael Kiwanuka is an unbelievably talented 24 year-old, this much cannot be denied. The three EPs he released in 2011 were among the best pieces of music to come out of the UK that year and it is no surprise that a major label came calling just in time to sign him as the year ended. Equally not surprising was his nomination for the BBC Sound of 2012, which he subsequently won at the start of this year and rightly so. What is surprising however is the disapproval that some critics have tried to lodge at Kiwanuka’s doorstep and their qualm stems from the notion that apparently Kiwanuka is “not original enough.” Read more

D'banj : Get Familiar

The official press release we received to inform us of a forthcoming concert at New York City’s Irving Plaza on Sunday, February 19 presented by Live Nation described the headline artist as “Kanye West’s Newest Protégée” and while much of that statement may be more PR jargon than truth [I mean this “protégée” is one of the biggest artists in modern Africa music albeit a “newcomer” in Pop music circles], it signals how far Nigerian Afrobeats singer, songwriter and musician D’banj – real name Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo - has come. Michael Kiwanuka : Get Familiar

23-year old North London Soul singer, songwriter and musician Michael Kiwanuka - with his beautiful blend of Vintage Soul, Jazz elements, real heartfelt lyrics, captivating vocals that he describes as “hitting straight to the core” and acoustic guitar - landed firmly on my radar far back in April of this year with his amazing debut single “Tell Me A Tale” via Communion Records [who are arguably one of the best independent UK labels of 2011, but we’ll save that argument for another day]...Read more

Deptford Goth: Get Familiar

You will take one look at that name above and immediately think, Deptford Goth? Since when does SoulCulture feature “Goth” music? Alas you’d be wrong in that assertion because while that name might conjure up ideas of bands like Bauhaus, The Cure and Southern Death Cult, the music on the other hand is as far removed from Goth or Gothic-style music as can be.

Having been highlighted as one of the “20 hottest producers in music right now” by the good folks at NME, nominated amongst The Guardian’s “10 of the next generation of young music producers” and worked with massive stars such as Tinie Tempah, Frankmusik, Olly Murs, The Wanted and The Saturdays (he co-wrote and co-produced their current single “All Fired Up”) - all before even writing his GCSE exams - I guess it would be safe to say that 17-year old British Nigerian singer, songwriter, remixer and producer MNEK (real name Uzoechi Osisioma Emenike) should be on all of our radars.
