The latest episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter is a meeting of pop culture royalty, as Bajan R&B princess Rihanna sits down with the Queen of All Media for an ultra-candid discussion on several topics, most notably the singer’s 2009 domestic violence incident with then-boyfriend and fellow superstar Chris Brown.

The 24-year-old admits to Oprah that despite the highly-publicized fight that left her face battered and bruised, she still felt compassion for Brown — whom she called her “first love” and says was her “best friend” at the time — and wanted to shield him from the raging firestorm of criticism to which he was subjected.

“As angry as I was, as angry and hurt and betrayed, I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help … and who’s going to help him?” she said. “Nobody’s going to say he needs help. Everybody’s going to say he’s a monster without looking at the source and I was more concerned about him.”

She also openly discussed the price of fame, her relationship with her late grandmother and other things, and even took Ms. Winfrey on a tour of the neighborhood where she grew up.
