Eighties R&B star El DeBarge has had a long-running battle with drugs and the law. Over the years, the 50 year old has been arrested on numerous charges such as possession of a controlled substance, possession of narcotics with intent to sell and possession of crack and other drug paraphernalia.

After cleaning up his act and staying drug-free, El made a comeback in 2010 as the unexpected highlight of the BET awards and went on to release his appropriately-named new album, Second Chance — which ended up nominated for two Grammys. However, shortly after his second rise to success came his fall, when El had to cancel his tour just a few days before it kicked off after being checked into rehab for his drug abuse.

In a recent interview with Atlanta radio station V103, El explained that he almost relapsed back into a life of drugs, but 50 Cent and Babyface interjected and made him go back to the treatment centre, taking him away from the situation and temptation.

El was also sentenced to two years in prison back in 2007 for breaking the terms of his probation.

We hope that El takes heed of the advice given by his friends and stays on the straight and narrow. Let’s hope that meeting with his friend Whitney Houston only a few days before her death is enough to kick him into action. We don’t want to see any more artists lose their battle to these terrible addictions.
